ALLEGHENY PROJECT DIRECTOR
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is seeking a committed and talented conservation professional to fill its Allegheny Project Director position. The director will lead and manage a large, complex conservation project based in Ridgway, PA. Successful outcomes will hinge on building and sustaining productive relationships with community leaders, the forest industry individual landowners and public/private agencies and organizations to protect the forest landscape and the natural features within.
A master’s degree in natural resource management or similar, with significant experience in forest management and seven – ten years work experience is required. Demonstrated knowledge and activity in some combination of conservation planning, conservation biology principles, forest conservation, ecological restoration, watershed protection, community relations, public policy/administration and real estate principles is required. The successful candidate will be an articulate, passionate and persuasive communicator who is able to make alliances and gain support from a variety of stakeholders. Must be able to raise program funds from both private and public sources. Familiarity with the region desirable.

MAINTENANCE POSITIONS – Full Time, Seasonal and Part Time
Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpiece located just 4 miles north of Ohiopyle, is looking for dependable people to fill full time, seasonal, and part time maintenance positions. The full time positions work year-round and the seasonal position works full time hours for approximately 9 months each year, with an abbreviated schedule in the off-season. Part time position will work less than 1000 hours per year. Must be available to work weekends and holidays as needed. Qualified candidates should have experience in skilled maintenance functions, including ability to work with power tools, chain saws, tractors, and perform various maintenance-related tasks. Sewage treatment experience is strongly preferred; state certification a plus. Essential functions of the job include physical ability to dig, lift and move heavy items, as needed. This is a unique opportunity to work at Fallingwater, the world-renowned architectural site and masterpiece designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The intern will be involved in a variety of tasks related to the care and management of the Fallingwater collection, and will work under the direct supervision of the Curator of Buildings and Collections. We are looking for a graduate student with education or background in Art History, Museum Studies, Architectural History, History, Historic Preservation, or a related field of study. This is a paid internship with free housing.

Will assist with on-site residencies and other education programs. Will complete an independent project focused on engaging people with Fallingwater. We are looking for qualified students who are either in their junior or senior year of a program in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Architecture History, Museum Studies, or Education. FALLINGWATER SUMMER LANDSCAPE INTERNSHIPS (2 Openings)

This is a unique opportunity to work at a world-renowned architectural site. The interns will be involved in a variety of landscape projects at Fallingwater, the masterpiece designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Two interns will work closely together under the guidance of Fallingwater’s Curatorial Department and retired Professor George Longenecker of West Virginia University’s Department of Landscape Architecture. We are looking for qualified students who are either in a masters program or their junior year of a four-year program or fourth year of a five-year program in Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Landscape Contracting or related fields of study. This is a paid internship with free housing. Interns will also participate in a field trip.

AQUATIC SCIENCE TECHNICIAN (2 openings)

The Aquatic Science Technician will be part of a team of scientists, students, and volunteers performing fieldwork for large-scale freshwater mussel projects in the Ohio/Allegheny and Susquehanna River watersheds in Pennsylvania. Duties will include sampling for freshwater mussels by wading with glass-bottom buckets, snorkeling, and SCUBA; sampling fish using seining and backpack electrofishing techniques; and performing physical stream measurements and water quality analysis. Additional responsibilities may include specimen identification, data management, and report preparation. The position will be located at WPC’s Pittsburgh office and will report to the Aquatic Ecologist.
Required qualifications:
- BS in biology, ecology, or environmental science field or junior year college level with field experience related to the above description.
- Ability and willingness to perform fieldwork as part of a team under potentially adverse conditions and long days in the field.
- Flexibility in scheduling; evening or weekend work may be required.
- Valid driver’s license and dependable transportation.
- Good computer skills.
Preferred qualifications:
- SCUBA, CPR and First Aid certification
- Fieldwork experience sampling freshwater mussels, fish, and/or benthic macroinvertebrates using a variety of the above techniques
- Experience or education using GIS/GPS (Arcview)
- Experience managing large data sets and performing statistical analyses
- Experience identifying freshwater mussels and/or fish of the Ohio River and/or Susquehanna River basins
- Experience with scientific report preparation and oral presentations
- Thorough understanding of watershed processes including biological, physical (geology and hydrology), and chemical
COMMUNITY SPECIALIST - COMMUNITY GARDENS AND GREENSPACE
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s has an opening for a highly motivated individual to join its Community Gardens/Greenspace staff. This position is responsible for developing a wide range of partnerships to support and sustain greening projects in multiple neighborhoods throughout western Pennsylvania. The position requires a person with extraordinary communication skills, successful fundraising skills, excellent interpersonal skills and strong organizational and task management skills. It will report to the Senior Director, Community Gardens/Greenspace and is based out of the 800 Waterfront Drive location in Pittsburgh.
This person will serve as a key community interface contact, initiating outreach, communicating the purposes and activities of the program, and strengthening relationships. The staff member will also work to discover and activate sources of financial and in-kind support for the department’s programs.

GIS INTERN

The GIS internship is open to students and graduates who have a strong GIS background and interest in gaining practical experience in GIS. Intern will get hands on experience creating and managing GIS data, performing spatial analysis, and cartography. Salary based on GIS experience and background. Work schedule is flexible with 40 hours a week preferred.
The GIS Intern will be responsible for assisting the Conservation GIS Specialist with a variety of tasks including map making, GIS data creation, property research, and GPS updates. The intern will work closely with the Land Protection department troubleshooting and providing mapping services.
Intern must be able to:
- Display & create maps using ArcGIS 9.x
- Understand how to edit shapefiles, geodatabase, create attribute tables
- Manipulate shapefiles and Geodatabases
- Organize information and GIS data using ArcCatalog
- Perform geo-spatial analysis
- Work on various projects self-sufficiently
- Research and follow property documents/deeds
- Willing to travel for various meeting locations and data collection locations
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as necessary
Preferred Qualifications:
- Thorough knowledge of ArcGIS
- Experience using Trimble GPS receivers
- Personal interest in environmental conservation

SCHOOL GROUNDS GREENING PROJECT COORDINATOR
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has an opening in its Community Gardens & Greenspace program for a professional to assess and implement opportunities to add greenscapes to city school grounds serving all 65 Pittsburgh Public Schools. Working with school administrators and personnel – from principals to teachers to facility managers – the project manager will organize, monitor, and track all project phases. Requirements include project management experience and experience with landscaping or environmental restoration work. TREE VITALIZE DIRECTOR
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has an exciting opening in its Community Gardens & Greenspace program for a Director of the TreeVitalize Project – a significant tree-planting initiative in the City of Pittsburgh and the County Parks. Working with a leadership team consisting of DCNR, City of Pittsburgh Planning, Allegheny County Parks, and Western PA Conservancy, the TreeVitalize Director will execute plans and tasks identified by the team and coordinate with its many local partners to establish and expand the initiative. Success will be measured by the number of trees planted, the amount of matching funds raised and the number of successful partnerships that are developed for both short and long term efforts to improve and increase the region’s tree canopy.
The position requires experience with project and contract development at the level of $1 million or greater. Position also requires successful experience with fundraising of all types at significant levels, demonstrable experience with landscape restoration projects, preferably tree plantings, experience developing community-based partnerships for local action, and significant budget tracking experience. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of the environmental issues and regional needs, outstanding communications skills, both written and verbal, and a background in urban and community design, particularly landscape design. French Creek Valley Conservancy, Project Manager – Located in Northwestern Pennsylvania, French Creek is renowned for its exceptional biological diversity, scenic qualities and recreational opportunities. The French Creek Valley Conservancy (FCVC) is seeking a Project Manager to implement land conservation projects and associated activities under a cooperative agreement developed recently with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC). The Project Manager has primary responsibility for achieving the common land protection goals of FCVC, WPC and TNC in the French Creek watershed. Duties include: outreach and communications to landowners, municipalities, conservation partners and the media; identifying and pursuing opportunities for land protection; preparing easement documents, baseline documents, and stewardship plans; conducting due diligence on legal transactions, facilitating stewardship activities; assisting with grant applications and the management of FCVC land protection records; and assisting FCVC in meeting Land Trust Alliance standards. The applicant should have: experience in land protection, land management or real estate; familiarity with the concepts, principles and practices of land trusts; excellent skills in communication and negotiation; a genuine interest in land conservation; and an ability to work well with diverse people and organizations to help them meet their land protection goals.
