Green Neighborhood InitiativeSM

Three steps to making a neighborhood "greener":

  1. Look for the best places to plant trees, plants, and flowers.

  2. Show homeowners how they can reduce fuel use and save on their heating and cooling bills.

  3. Identify buildings and spaces with the most historic value and start preserving them for the long haul.

Simple as it sounds, this three-pronged approach is already making a difference in Pittsburgh's neighborhoods -- thanks to the efforts of the Green Neighborhood Initiative, a joint venture between Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Conservation Consultants Incorporated, and the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Association.

As the designated garden experts, we've found that trees bring lots of value to neighborhoods. They make people feel safer. They clean the air and, by providing shade, lower electricity bills. They revitalize communities and encourage businesses to locate there.

And they just plain look nice!

With the help of generous donors like you, WPC and its partners can take this proven conservation approach to needy communities throughout western Pennsylvania and, ultimately, around the nation.
