The Ruby-throated Hummingbird
The ruby-throated hummingbird is amazingly small and energetic. This species has now returned to the eastern U.S. having spent the winter in Central and South America. A true wonder of nature, this tiny creature migrates by flying across the Gulf of Mexico!
Although the western U.S. is home to more than a dozen species of hummingbirds, the ruby-throated is the only regularly occuring hummingbird of the eastern states, where it occupies habitats ranging from suburban backyards to wilder haunts of Pennsylvania's mountains.
