Parkway East Greening Takes Highway Back to Its Roots

Once called ther Garden Parkway, the Parkway East is finally living up to its name. Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is partnering with PennDOT to plant hundreds of trees and shrubs along with thousands of flowers in the median at both the east, suburban-side entrance and the west, city-side entrances to the Squirrel Hill Tunnel.

"Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has implemented a number of community greening projects that promote urban beautification and enhance highly visible gateway corridors as part of our efforts to create attractive and desirable metropolitan communities," said WPC President and CEO Larry Schweiger. "The greening of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel elegantly accomplishes our goal of enhancing the aesthetic quality of the eastern approach to the City of Pittsburgh with colorful flowerbeds designed and implemented in the European tradition. This project will provide a welcome and long overdue enhancement to the city's eastern access. Both visitors and residents will be presented with a fresh, positive image of our city that will remain for a lifetime."
