Tips for a Successful Study Trip to Fallingwater

  • Call two months ahead of your trip date for tour reservations.

  • If you’re planning more than one stop, get your Fallingwater reservations first.

  • Allow at least 2 hours on site at Fallingwater. Better yet, plan to spend the day here and at nearby Bear Run Nature Reserve.

  • Students need only be age 6 to tour the house, but for ages 6-9 our special children’s tour format is more appropriate. Contact the Curator of Education first, before making your reservations.

  • Contact the Curator of Education to borrow videos or slide programs for pre-visit preparation. If you need a special focus or additional programming, discuss this when you make your reservation.

  • Submit your $100 deposit at least three weeks before your tour. Deposits are non-refundable ten days before your tour.

  • If you plan to eat at our Café, contact the Café Manager when you make your reservation. Only with advance arrangements will your class be able to eat there. Sorry, we do not have space for students with bag lunches; however, you may use picnic tables at the nature reserve.

  • Arrange for one chaperone for each 12 students. Adults serving as chaperones receive free admission; accompanying adults above the required number of chaperones will pay the regular admission price.

  • Prepare chaperones ahead of time by using our Guide for Chaperones.

  • Prepare students for their visit using the materials in the educator’s packet.

  • Assigning students to groups ahead of time is helpful, but be prepared for them to be re-assigned by the Fallingwater staff. Divide them evenly into groups of no more than 12, plus one chaperone for each group.

  • Have students travel lightly! We cannot accommodate bookbags or any large parcels inside Fallingwater.

  • Be prepared for the weather! Much of the tour is outside.

  • Allow enough travel time to be able to arrive about 20 minutes ahead of your tour time. Give your students time to use the public restrooms at the Visitors Pavilion, since there are no such facilities in Fallingwater.

  • Late arrivals may have to wait past your tour time for us to be able to accommodate you, especially in May and October, when we may have more than 700 visitors per day.

  • Buses must turn off their engines while parked, in order to save our natural environment.

  • Photography is not permitted during the tour. We encourage quick sketching, as long as students can keep up with the pace of the tour.

  • Let your tour guide know what the class has been studying, and on what topics you would like the guide to focus. Our guides love questions! Encourage your students to ask some.

  • Encourage the students to respect the landscape as much as the house. Remind them to stay on paths at all times.
