Fallingwater FAQs for teachers
Can elementary students take a tour?
Yes! Our new age limit for touring Fallingwater is 6. However, the regular tour may not always be of interest to lower elementary students. Please contact the Curator of Education to discuss other tour options, including our At Home in Nature children’s tour.
Isn’t Fallingwater closed due to restorations?
No. We are currently operating on our regular schedule. Tours have not been affected – in fact, now is a rare time to peer inside Fallingwater to see its structure revealed.
I don’t teach architecture. What might be of interest to my students?
Lots! Fallingwater guides can discuss the history of the house in the context of western Pennsylvania in the 1930’s; Frank Lloyd Wright as an American artist; the Kaufmanns’ art collection on display at the house, and their role in promoting modern design; how the structure works; the natural ecosystem surrounding Fallingwater.
I’d like to do a complete unit on Fallingwater. Can you help?
Yes, in several ways! Ask for our Educators’ Packet with resources available to you, tips on using architecture in the classroom, study sheets. Borrow one of our several videos or scripted slide programs on the house. Take one of our courses to learn even more!
The Annual Teacher Residency in Architecture Education (2 CEU’s) is a week full of Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright, and how to share this with students. Limited to only 12 teachers nationwide.
The Nature of Fallingwater course (1 CEU) trains you to use the Fallingwater/Bear Run property as a natural laboratory for environmental studies.
What else is there to do besides a house tour?
Many teachers plan a day at Bear Run, including a tour of Fallingwater, a picnic at Bear Run Nature Reserve, and a hike along one of the Reserve’s many trails. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Earth Day, we will be unveiling a new extended outdoor tour, The Land of Fallingwater. Contact the Curator of Education about the school group version.
