A
Few Facts about Western Pennsylvania's Community Conservation Program
2002
marks the 20th year of Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's contemporary garden
program.
More
than ¼ million flowers are planted each year.
The
program was initiated in the city of Pittsburgh and has expanded into 20 counties.
During
May and early June, more than 5,000 volunteers join us in creating floral
accents at more than 400 locations this year. As many as 28 gardens are planted
in a single day.
Gardens
are created in areas ranging from neighborhood corners to busy highways. Through
our partnerships, we're involved with all manner of volunteers -- children
who are planting flowers for the very first time, families who are committed
to their neighborhoods and to each other, and seniors, who are able to share
their wisdom and their experiences. One of our garden stewards even offers
to fix children's bicycles in exchange for a little time in the garden!
The
annual installation of the gardens takes tremendous coordination and teamwork
on the part of Western Pennsylvania Conservancy staff at WPC can have great
pride in this program that creates beautiful gardens and truly builds community.
Even
with all this dedication and hard work, the effort could not be successful
without the support of our sponsors. The formal and grassroots support for
this program ranges from federal and state agencies, local municipalities,
large and small corporations, foundations, community groups, and individuals.
We salute their commitment to partner with us to green our highways and neighborhoods.
