The Flight Plans of a Rufous Hummingbird A frequent guest in western Pennsylvania, the rufous hummingbird travels 4,000 miles from its Alaskan breeding ground to its Mexican wintering ground. Nature has provided more than one navigational strategy for migrating birds. Celestial navigation is used heavily by birds that travel by night. Day-travelers use the earth's magnetic field and their own "internal compass" to guide them on cloudy days. Today's photo is courtesy of the Hummingbird Society.
