Flower Arrangement at Fallingwater

Since given to Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963, the care of Fallingwater and its collections has been based on the specific requests laid out by Edgar Kaufmann, jr. He felt that the house should not be over interpreted, and the interiors should be presented as home-like as possible.

To give "life" to the house, 148 fresh cut flowers are placed throughout Fallingwater each Thursday. Using only one type of flower in each container, stems are cut to varying heights and loosely arranged, just as Mr. Kaufmann's mother, Liliane, preferred. All over the house, the whites, yellows, reds, and oranges of the Cremones, Alstromerias, Asiatic lilies, and Daisy Mums accentuate the colors of Fallingwater's textiles and collections and help to provide a counterpoint to the building's concrete and stone surfaces. Mrs. Kaufmann favored white flowers, like these Daisy Mums placed in an Alvar Aalto designed Savoy Vase on the desk in Edgar Kaufmann, Sr.'s study.
