Shorebird Migration Birders all over the state are flocking to places such as Shenango Reservoir, Pymatuning, and Presque Isle in hopes of observing migrating shorebirds such as sandpipers, plovers, and dowitchers. This is challenging birding, with a spotting scope (as opposed to binoculars) being the essential tool. The birds congregate in low water areas, and mud flats where they can feed. They are very nondescript in color to the average observer, but to the expert birder, identifying the dozens of species is one of the biggest skills to master.
