Colorizing the Squirrel Hill Tunnels

The second-most traveled entrance to Pittsburgh is, for the first time ever, blooming. This past season, motorists at both entrances to the Squirrel Hill Tunnels saw 800 daffodils and 3,500 red tulips and later, more than 3,500 petunias, salvia sweet potato vines and pennisetum rubrum. Last fall, WPC began late-night installation of approximately 190 concrete planters ranging in size from four to five feet in diameter. At that time, WPC planted more than 200 trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses and spring bulbs in the cold soil. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) was instrumental in making this project a reality.

PennDOT statistics report that nearly 500,000 vehicles traverse this busy section of the Parkway East every week, making it one of the most highly traveled corridors in western Pennsylvania.
