Destination Thursday: Pa.'s Highest Point - Mt. Davis Natural Area A pleasant way to spend a hot summer day is a journey to Mt. Davis Natural Area in Somerset County. Near the Maryland border, it is the highest point in Pennsylvania. At 3,213 feet, it is the lowest high point in the Appalachian Mountain states. It consists of a 581-acre natural area in Forbes State forest. Interesting trails, a heath barren, and a rhododendren and hemlock-lined stream are some of its key features. An easy, mostly level three mile loop trail begins at the picnic area at the top of the mountain where you can park your car. There is an observation tower next to the parking lot. Layered clothing is advisable for the weather can be cool even in late summer. WPC Daily featured Mt. Davis on February 1st.
