Getting in touch with our Sensitive Ferns

A Sensitive fern (Onoclea sensibilis) can be found in moist areas and bogs and did not get its name because it is sensitive to touch. Instead, it acquired its moniker from its sensitivity to early frosts. Spores are produced on stalks separate from the fronds. True to its name, the large, egg shaped leaves of the skunk cabbage produce a disagreeable odor when crushed.
