The Difference Between and Red Fox and Gray Fox Pennsylvania is home to two species of fox, the red fox (featured today) and the gray fox. The scientific genus name for red fox (Vulpes) is Latin for "fox." The gray fox's scientific genus name (Urocyon) means "tailed dog." The red fox has a long bushy white-tipped tail and the gray sports a black-tipped tail. Called the tree fox by many the gray will quickly shinny up a tree if pursued and can jump from branch to branch unlike the red fox, which will run and use its cunning to outwit its pursuer. The
red fox can be heard to howl, screech and yell at night. Though its diet
ranges from mice and voles to grubs and beetles it is a clever poultry
stealer expert at entering chicken coops. It also eats fruits.
