Destination Thursday: Canoeing the middle Allegheny River From the Kinzua Dam near Warren, Pa. to the town of East Brady in southern Clarion County, the middle Allegheny River flows free and unobstructed by dams. This is truly one of America's great wild river sections, with clusters of islands, deep slow eddys, shallow riffles and long runs. This is a canoer's wonderland, where hours can be spent drifting by shaded banks, along steep forested valley slopes and under foraging bald eagles. Also in this area are the U. S. Forest Service's Allegheny River Wilderness Islands, all seven of which are available to canoe camping. There
are a several put-in and take-out locations for the paddler, and rental
outfits that provide canoes. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission
offers free
trail maps of the middle Allgheny River and sites to see along
the way. Experience Pa. has directions
to Warren, Pa. and links for food and lodging. Throughout WPC's 71 year history we have protected a total of 19,811 acres that protect islands, shorelines and the valley sides of the scenic and biologically rich Allegheny River. Most of this land has been conveyed to state and federal agencies for public stewardship; however, WPC continues to hold 242 acres in the form of two islands and one floodplain forest. Additionally, we hold 11,305 acres in a conservation/recreation easement, the bulk of which is the Crawford Reserve in Venango County.
