A member of the carrot family at Sideling Hill Creek

Sideling Hill Creek's variable stream flow makes a perfect home for Harperella (Ptilimnium nodosum). Harperella, a semi-aquatic member of the carrot family that depends on seasonally fluctuating stream flow, flourishes in the lower reaches of Sideling Hill Creek. As the creek flows south its channel widens and seasonally exposed cobblestone and gravel shoals, Harperella's preferred habitat, become more abundant. Sideling Hill Creek's Harperella population is one of just five known viable populations in the United States.
