Pa.'s State Insect Brightens a Summer Evening Pennsylvania's state insect is a firefly (Photuris pensylvanica), or Pennsylvania firefly. This insect has about the most efficient energy system known; it produces light and almost no heat. Nocturnal, these insects use controlled flashes of light to attract mates. Some of the best places to find them are over meadows or lawns, and at the edges of woods and streams. The firefly family (there are dozens of species) is aptly named: Lampyridae. All species are predators and feed on other insects. E-mail Today's WPC Daily to a Friend! Rediscover western Pennsylvania every morning with WPC Daily.
