Pitt Peregrines to be Banded The four peregrine falcon chicks hatched on May 5, 2003 at the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning will be banded by representatives of the Pennsylvania Game Commission this morning. This year, for the first time, fifth graders who won our Conservation Essay Contest, will be attending and participating in the banding event. Bands are coded bracelets that biologists affix to the legs of birds to study them. Click here to read the four winning essays In
the winter of 2002, with financial aid from Pa. Game Commission, WPC staff
and volunteers built a nest box, which University of Pittsburgh administrators
allowed to be placed on campus, near the top of the famous Cathedral of
Learning, in Oakland. A pair of falcons nested there and last Mother's
Day the very first Pitt Peregrines entered the world. Our Web camera at the Cathedral of Learning nesting site captured the photos above.
