Pennsylvania hosts about 2,500 lakes (greater than 20 acres in size), a mere 70 of these are natural lakes. The remaining lakes are man-made; usually the result of daming a stream and flooding its valley. Natural lakes are mostly the result of glaciation. The Wisconsin glacial ice sheet was one mile thick in places and gouged out depressions, dropped dams of gravel and dirt, and left behind huge blocks of ice that weighed down the land. Other than the huge Lake Erie, there are only 8 natural lakes in western Pennsylvania. Conneaut Lake in Crawford County (pictured today from an aerial view) is Pennsylvania's largest natural lake. (929 acres)
