Hellbender The eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) is the largest of Northeast salamanders, and one of the largest species of salamanders in the world. It can grow to a length of 29 inches, weigh 5 lbs., and live for 30 years. They are rather bizarre in appearance with a large, flat head almost as broad as it is long and tiny eyes. They inhabit medium size streams and large rivers, with fast to medium flowing water. Large rocks in such areas are used for shelter. It is found in French Creek and other relatively clean Pennsylvania streams, such as its namesake, the Allegheny River.
