'Land of Fallingwater' Volunteers Provide Interpretation of Bear Run Ecosystem Today's photo (taken this past Wednesday) shows WPC Volunteer Dr. Sidney Wolfson hiking with students from Connellsville Area Catholic School as part of the "Land of Fallingwater" tour at Bear Run Nature Reserve. Dr. Wolfson is one of many volunteer interpreters who co-lead these tours with Fallingwater tour guides. A retired neurosurgeon, Dr. Wolfson has logged in countless volunteer hours with Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and Fallingwater. As
he explains it, he can now set his own schedule. "That's what I call
retirement. What would you call it?" he asks. His achievements include
teaching Stanley B. Pruisiner, a 1997 Nobel Laureate for Medicine who
discovered prions. Dr. Wolfson still lectures all over the world. But
in his "off" hours, he is an "Ask Me" Guide and a
Land of Fallingwater Guide. The "Land of Fallingwater" tour was created in 2000 to provide interpretation of the Bear Run ecosystem and how the natural landscape influenced Frank Lloyd Wright's design for Fallingwater. From its beginnings, volunteers have become the backbone of this tour option. Offered on Saturdays for the general public and during the week for school students, the "Land of Fallingwater" is quickly becoming a popular tour option for visitors who either want additional information about the Bear Run area, or who want to make a full day out of their Fallingwater visit. Volunteer interest in providing interpretive support at the Fallingwater site has grown so much that the staff has added a new role. Volunteers now also serve as "Ask Me" guides on the Fallingwater grounds, answering visitor questions and leading brief hikes on the property. If you're interested in becoming a volunteer interpreter at Fallingwater, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Deborah Ewald at 724-329-1441, extension 1203, or at dewald@paconserve.org
