Dressing Up Pittsburgh's Welcome Mat

While they can't make the traffic flow any faster through the summer's many detours, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and garden sponsor Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania are determined to brighten area motorists' commutes by planting nearly 6,000 flowers in three gardens at the south portal interchange of the Liberty Tunnels. The Liberty Tunnels planting will take place on Saturday, May 31, beginning at 8 a.m. and concluding in early afternoon. We invite you to be a part of this beautiful way to build community, meet some terrific Pittsburghers, and help create a vibrant entrance to our city.

"Because of the sheer volume of traffic that passes these sites, these gardens make a lot of people's lives a little bit better," said Larry Schweiger, president of WPC. "In the case of the Liberty Tunnels garden, the numbers of folks affected are even higher than usual because of the construction detours."

Join us, rain or shine, as volunteers from Allegheny and several surrounding counties will convene at the Liberty Tunnels this Saturday to dig and plant and irrigate and mulch their way to re-creating one of the largest and most beautiful flowerbed sites in the Pittsburgh region. Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania will be providing a sumptuous lunch for all volunteers.

The Liberty Tunnels channel nearly 400,000 South Hills motorists through the area every week.
