French Creek's Bucket Brigade Students, adults and senior volunteers work side-by-side with professional scientists from WPC in French Creek. Local volunteer water quality monitors from the Environmental Alliance for Senior Involvement (EASI) are important partners that help collect water samples for WPC's French Creek watershed assessment. Student volunteers from local universities assist with aquatic insect sampling as part of the watershed monitoring efforts. Pictured is WPC's Tamara Smith, Aquatic Ecologist and Amy Bush, Volunteer Intern, looking for mussels in French Creek. Glass-bottomed buckets are used to cut down on the glare of sunlight reflecting on the creek and allow the observer to search the creek bottom. WPC
is seeking the help of volunteers to assist with sampling for freshwater
mussels and fish between May and October 2003. If you are
interested in getting involved and getting wet, contact WPC's Northwest
Field Station at (814) 739-9991 or tsmith@paconserve.org.
