Birding Excursion at McConnell's Mill State Park On Saturday morning, April 26, 2003, WPC staff led a group on hikes along the beautiful and scenic Slippery Rock Creek in McConnell's Mill State Park in Lawrence County. The group observed both arrivals and departures as a variety of birds were about to migrate north and some had just arrived to nest at the park. McConnell's Mill was designated an Important Bird Area by Pennsylvania Audubon Society in 2002. Gene Wilhelm, of the Bartramian Audubon Society chapter, shared his knowledge of the migration of the birds to this area and the importance of the Slippery Rock Creek gorge forests and stream corridors as a nesting region for some sensitive bird species. Pictured above are Charles Bier, WPC's Natural Heritage program director, and Steve Grund, WPC botanist, who made a 7:30 a.m. presentation before the tours began. McConnell's Mill State Park was WPC's first land protection project (1957). If you would like to know more about upcoming WPC presentations, including Wild in the Woods - An Adventure with Nature on September 13th at Bear Run Nature Reserve, click here. The all-day affair features hayrides, wild animals and Keynote Speaker David Crockett IV, a fourth generation descendant of the legendary "King of the Wild Frontier." Members can tour Fallingwater for free that day. E-mail Today's WPC Daily to a Friend! Get WPC Daily. Become a Western Pennsylvania Conservancy Member WPC Works to Protect Species' Habitat |
