The Buzz about Honey Bees and Lesser Known Social Insects To make a tablespoon of honey, a bee must visit about 2,000 flowers. There are, however, many types of social insects besides honey bees that visit flowers to collect both pollen and nectar. Pictured above are the brightly colored insects often referred to as yellow jackets visiting swamp milkweed flowers found in Pine Swamp*, in Mercer County. More Facts: Workers, the smallest bees or wasps in the colony, are sexually undeveloped females. A colony can have 50,000 to 60,000 workers. * WPC purchased Pine Swamp in Mercer County to protect its unique wetlands and later sold it to become part of State Gamelands No. 130.
