A 435 Foot Drop The Ohio River falls from 710 feet above sea level at its beginning in Pittsburgh, to 275 feet above sea level where it discharges into the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois. Pictured above is the Ohio River at the Montgomery Lock and Dam, Ohioview, in Beaver County, Pa. The Ohio River is one of the nation's major waterways for commerce and water supply, but it is also critically important as wildlife habitat. The importance of the Ohio River is highlighted in WPC's report: Beaver County Natural Heritage Inventory.
