Sideling Hill Creek is Mussel Bound

Sideling Hill Creek is home to seven different freshwater mussel species, including the regionally rare green floater (Lasmigona subviridis) and the brook floater (Alasmidonata varicosa). However, being a freshwater mussel in Sideling Hill Creek takes a little luck. The average stream flow of Sideling Hill Creek in March is approximately 140 cubic feet per second; by late-August Sideling Hill Creek’s stream flow averages less than 2 cubic feet per second. If you are a freshwater mussel you had better make sure you live in one of the many seasonal pools found during the low-water months!

Citizens who live near Sideling Hill Creek are taking an active role in preserving their lifestyle. With WPC's staff, they are making plans, implementing projects and seeking out other partners and resources to protect this special place.
