Early Spring Pruning Suggestions

Most summer-flowering shrubs such as spirea should be pruned in early spring. Prune most spring-flowering shrubs, such as forsythia and azaleas, right after their flowers fade.

Pictured above are azaleas. All azaleas are in the genus Rhododendron, with evergreen azaleas in the subgenus Tsutsusi and deciduous azaleas in the subgenus Pentanthera.

You can see both naturally occurring and cultivated azaleas on the grounds of Fallingwater, which is now open on weekends and will begin its 40th season of welcoming visitors next Tuesday, March 18.
