From a Bear to Tiger The wooly bear caterpillar (Pyrrharctia isabella) metamorphoses into the beautiful isabella tiger moth. As this caterpillar grows, it sheds its skin several times, becoming browner with each shedding. This change in coloration has nothing to do with a prediction of winter's severity. The
wooly bear caterpillar is a generalist feeder, eating many different plants
and, as such, is found in many habitats from WPC's 373 protected acres
at Wattsburg Fens Natural Area, in Erie County; to the 1,000 acres WPC
protected at
Enlow Fork Valley (now permanently protected as State Gamelands No.
302), in Washington and Greene Counties.
