Beech Tree Spotting

Beech trees are easy to pick out in the winter because their leaves remain
attached long into the season. The leaves of beech, along with many of the oaks, form incomplete abscission layers (a row of cells that forms at the base of the stem) between the leaf stem and twig, allowing the leaves to remain well into winter.

Some WPC properties where you could see do a little Beech tree spotting are at Toms Run, in Allegheny County; Bear Run Nature Reserve, in Fayette County; and Lake Pleasant, in Erie County.
