Protecting Sandy Creek

Sandy Creek enters the Allegheny River five miles south of Franklin, Pa. The streams flows east from the glaciated portions of its upper watershed in Mercer County.

Sandy Lake, which is one of only eight natural glacial lakes in Pennsylvania, is in the headwaters area of the watershed at Stoneboro, Pa. WPC continues to study these eight lakes as part our Glacial Lakes Flora project.

The photo at right was taken at WPC protected property along lower Sandy Creek, as it meanders towards its junction with the Allegheny River in Venango County, Pennsylvania.

Photo provided by WPC Member John M. Karian, who does nature photography in Venango County.
