Shaking the Need to Use Rock Salt Limit the amount of salt you put on your walks and driveway during the winter months. Salt doesn't disappear; it is held in the soil and water and affects aquatic life. Pictured above is a sand darter, which is found in French Creek and is
a Pennsylvania Endangered species. WPC is working to protect French Creek
and recently prepared a conservation plan with the help of watershed residents.
The plan identifies siltation as a problem in the creek. Too much silt
can cover the sandy stream bottom and limit good habitat for the sand
darter. The effects of road silt on this and other rare fish is not know.
