Celebrating the natural beauty of western Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's Longest Winter Ever

In 1816, "the year without a summer," the northeast had heavy snow in June, and frost even in July and August, that repeatedly killed farmer's crops.

Pictured above is a winter shot of one of the bridges found along the Wagon Trail at Bear Run Nature Reserve, Fayette County. The walking trail, one of many to be found here, crosses Bear Run Creek three times. Since 1963, this 5,000-acre reserve on the western slope of the Laurel Mountains has been owned and protected by Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The protection of this area is also important because it encompasses the majority of the Bear Run watershed, which is the stream that flows under Fallingwater.
