Celebrating the natural beauty of western Pennsylvania

Bear Run

The black bear has been clocked at running 28 mph. Also, as was mentioned in the February 5th WPC Daily, bears do not strictly hibernate, they enter a sleep-like dormancy. Black bears give birth in the winter.

High quality black bear habitat can be found in northern Clinton County at Tamarack Swamp where WPC has protected nearly 10,000 acres of forest and wetlands.

The above photo of a black bear cub in winter was taken by WPC President Larry Schweiger.
