Red-tailed hawks One of Pennsylvania's most wide-spread raptors, the Red-tailed Hawk ( Buteo jamaicensis ) is a bird of open country. It is often seen perching in trees adjacent to fields where it searches for mice, voles, shrews, rabbits, red and gray squirrels, chipmunks and small birds. It's also common to see these birds perched on light posts along highways scanning the right-of-way and nearby fields for prey. Today's photo is by John Calaman.
