White Bridge, Greene County

White Bridge is located on Township Route 604, just south of State Route 2011, approximately 2 miles west of Garards Fort in Greene County.

Except for the 1990 state survey, all other data listing the original construction date of this bridge indicate 1919. The state survey, however, has the “year built” as 1900. The White covered bridge is just a short distance from the site of the Red or Neils covered bridge, which was destroyed in recent years by arson. This has an exceptionally high queenpost truss structure giving it a 17 ft. 6 in. clearance and an exceptionally high ten-ton load limit. There is no evidence of steel reinforcement.

The bridge is covered with white vertical tongue-and-groove board siding on both the sides and the portals. The roof is covered with sheet metal, and the deck with lengthwise planking in the tire track area, laid over diagonal planking. The structure rests on cut stone-and-mortar abutments with short, high-cut stone-and-mortar wingwalls. It has a typical narrow lengthwise opening under the eaves.
