Destination Thursday: Canoeing from Clear Creek State Park

Set along the Clarion River, just north of Brookville, Jefferson County, Clear Creek State Park is a cozy getaway and a canoeist's paradise. There are approximately 25 miles of well maintained trails throughout the park and a one-half mile exercise trail in the large cabin area. Rhododendron and mountain laurel abound throughout the park and wildlife, including deer, bear, turkey and grouse are commonly seen in the area. A slope of almost two acres attracts sledding enthusiasts during the winter. A three-mile cross-country ski trail is available. A lighted ice skating area with a shelter, fire ring and firewood is provided at the canoe launch area. Both cabins and Yurts are available for rent.

Whether you bring your own canoe or rent one, a popular activity is the 11-mile trip from Clear Creek State Park to Cook Forest State Park. Rustic log and stone cabins and trails winding through ancient pines and hemlocks make Cook State Forest Park a great place to spend a secluded, rustic vacation.

Cabins and other facilities in these parks are open from the second Friday in April through the third Friday in December. Access is not guaranteed during severe winter weather. Check weather conditions by calling the park office or 888-PA-PARKS.
