The Eastern Redbud

The eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) is small understory tree that blooms before the leaves come out. A member of the Pea Family (Fabaceae) the flowers on the redbud have an irregular or non-symetrical shape that is typical of most members of this family. The redbud is found in southern Pennsylvania most often in places where limestone is present. Redbuds can also be used in gardens.

Recently in Slippery Rock, Pa., a redbud was planted in one of the more than 200 WPC Community Gardens. Be sure to look for the pink blossoms of the redbud next spring. The picture is by of a redbud in Greene County near Rice's Landing, Pa.
