Destination Thursday: Quaker Falls Quaker Falls is located on Falling Springs Creek in western Lawrence County about ½ mile east of the Ohio state line. A rich hemlock - hardwoods forest covers the “gorge” below and is similar to that in Hell Run Gorge at McConnell's Mill State Park. Falling Spring Creek actually descends as two sets of falls; the upper falls, or “Quaker Falls,” is the larger of the two and is located just north of where Route 224 crosses Falling Spring Creek. The lower, smaller falls sit about ¼ mile north of the larger falls. Around the turn of the 20th century, Quaker Falls was a favorite picnic spot for the citizens of New Castle and Youngstown. Today the property is owned by The West Penn Power Company. The remains of Quakertown, originally named Quaker Falls, lies to the west of Falling Spring Run. A town settled by Quakers in the 1800s, Quakertown declined with the arrival of the steel mills in nearby Lowellville, Ohio. The foundations of houses that once populated Quakertown are still visible today. Today's photo is by WPC Ecologist Robert Coxe. E-mail Today's WPC Daily to a Friend!
