It's Buck Moth Season

One of the rarest moths in the eastern United States is the buck moth. This moth flys in the fall from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. They are named “buck moth” because their appearance coincides with deer-hunting season. They are very attractive black moths with white wing bands and red markings.

They can live only in pine barrens that support a good population of scrub or bear oaks.

One place to see the buck moth is "The Barrens" or State Gamelands 176 in Centre County.
