Sustainable Countrysides

"The time has long since passed when a citizen can function responsibly without a broad understanding of the living landscape of which he is inseparably a part." - Paul B. Sears, ecologist and conservationist, early researcher of human ecology

A dairy cow must drink three gallons of water to produce one gallon of milk. An ear of corn needs 26 gallons of water to reach maturity. Agriculture is the number-one industry in Pennsylvania and pure water is vital to maintaining this important economic commerce. How can we supply the food we need on the limited land that we have without compromising the land and waters on which we fundamentally depend? Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's Sustainable Countrysides Program, housed at our field station at Sideling Hill Creek Watershed in southern Bedford County, hosts many programs that strive to protect our water quality and natural resources, while preserving the economic and social fabric of our rural communities and working landscapes.
