Fall Clean Up

On each weekend in October, hundreds of volunteers join WPC staff in cleaning up the community flower gardens and getting them ready for winter. In 19 counties, volunteers are pulling out annual plant material and putting it in leaf bags to be recycled, pulling up plastic (used for weed control), and raking the bed smooth so it looks presentable for the winter months. We always welcome new volunteers -- individuals, school groups, community groups -- everyone is welcome!

This Saturday (October 18) will be a particularly busy day and we're in need of volunteers to help us with three of our larger sites in the City of Pittsburgh - Ft. Pitt Tunnel, Liberty Tunnel, and the garden near Point State Park. We'll be out there rain or shine!

As an added bonus, if you volunteer at a site that has Canna flowers in the garden, you will be able to take some bulbs home. These bulbs can be stored in a cool dry place over the winter and planted in your garden in the spring! We'll also provide you with a handout of tips for saving your Canna bulbs.

If you're interested in helping, contact Marianne Cola at (412) 586-2324 or mcola@paconserve.org for more details.
