125 Years of Acid Mine Discharge
Acid mine discharges resulting from more than 125 years of coal mining, polluted the Indian Creek Watershed, in the area of Jones Mills, Westmoreland County to the Youghiogheny River, Fayette County. In the past two years, the major discharges have been identified and thanks to neighboring citizen groups like the Mountain Watershed Association, Inc. two treatment systems are now in place at these discharge points. WPC's Watershed Assistance Center assisted the group in getting the necessary permitting paperwork completed. Pictured above is a recent photo of many ducks (and one swan) enjoying a break in the ice at Indian Creek Reservoir. |
