The Last Stages of Restoration Work at Fallingwater

Work is currently underway on Edgar Kaufmann, Sr.’s Terrace at Fallingwater. A temporary shelter has been installed so that the area can be heated. In order to access the cantilevered structural system, the Fallingwater Maintenance staff is cataloging, removing, and storing the stone pavers on site and will also remove the subfloor. Structural Preservation Systems, Inc. of Elkhart, Maryland, will then strengthen the system by epoxying carbon fiber laminate to the tops of the concrete beams and joists. In February, the terrace will be waterproofed and, like putting a jigsaw puzzle together, the catalogued pavers will return to their same locations.

All restoration work will be completed on the Frank Lloyd Wright masterwork before March, 1, 2003, when the house will open for the season. The photo above was taken last weekend by Fallingwater's Curator of Buildings and Collections Cara Armstrong.
