A “Green” Barn at Fallingwater

Various materials were recycled in the recent adaptive reuse of the Barn at Fallingwater (Fayette County, PA) contributing to its designation as a green building. Most visitors to the barn will notice that the building's exterior has changed little. The expansive roof, weathered siding and landmark hollow clay tile silo are intact. The silo roof was not replaced, but sections of the siding and hollow clay tiles were repaired. The newer portion of the barn, which originally served as a milking parlor, dates to the 1940s. The glazed tile blocks, glass blocks, and concrete floor of the milking parlor were all retained in the new design and add a flavor of authenticity to the new multipurpose room, as does the newly planed red cedar. Heavy timbers of the older nineteenth century barn are intact on both the lower and upper levels.

The Barn at Fallingwater was again the setting for WPC's Wild in the Woods members event on September 11, 2004. For more information about WPC's Fallingwater, got to Visiting Fallingwater on the WPC web site at paconserve.org.
