What's Blooming at Bear Run Nature Reserve in September? Rough-leaved sunflower (Helianthus strumosus) is one of approximately 20 species of sunflowers with yellow disk flowers that bloom in our region during August and September. These plants are closely related to the large flowered sunflower grown in gardens and for oil, seeds and bird food. The species are all in the genus Helianthus, which refers to the sun. The rough-leaved sunflower's habitat includes woods, thickets and clearings. Yellow flower heads branch from smooth or slightly rough main stems. Height is 3 to 7 feet. Look for this species as you hike on one of the Bear Run Nature Reserve trails near Fallingwater. This sunflower species has been recorded from almost every Pennsylvania county. Today's photo is by Robert Coxe, WPC Ecologist, and was taken in Greene County, PA on a levee of the Monongahela River in 2003.
