Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia humifusa)

The prickly pear cactus pictured here is called “tunas” in Mexico. The cactus bears fruit that turns red when ripe. The pulp of the fruit has a consistency similar to watermelon, a sweet taste like a summer plum and a vibrant magenta color. The fruit is quite delectable if you can get past the prickles on the surfact!

If you see a prickly pear in Pennsylvania, be sure not to eat it. This species is listed as PA Rare on the plants of special concern list for Pennsylvania. Since it is a cactus, it is naturally found in hot, dry areas such as shale barrens. It can be found in portions of central Pennsylvania and along the upper Delaware River. Sightings of the plant include Bedford, Cumberland, Franklin, Huntingdon, Berks and Snyder, Bucks and Montgomery counties as well as other locations along the Delaware.
