In May 2004, WPC's Watershed Assistance Center unveiled a Clarion River Water Trail Map – the first of its kind for this federally designated Wild & Scenic River of northwestern Pennsylvania. The map shows river access, points of interest, safety features, roads and public lands. This project would not have been possible without a strong partnership with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission and the Allegheny National Forest. The map can be viewed and printed online at http://www.fish.state.pa.us/.
The next step in the project is to start a signage program to let river users know where to access the river as part of a "water trail." The project got its initial boost in July 2004 with a grant from the Safari Club, International. The funding will provide for the first four water trail signs. Stay tuned.
The Clarion River valley has been a focal point of WPC conservation efforts since the late 1970's. Although traditional activities such as land protection through acquisition have provided success, public outreach and involvement are believed to be key to long term success.
