Hike to Your Heart's Content
The Hearts Content/Hickory Creek Hike takes you on a tour through a portion of southwestern Allegheny National Forest in Warren County, Pennsylvania. Allegheny National Forest consists of over 512,000 acres. It is one of 15 national forests in the eastern United States, and the only national forest in Pennsylvania.
This hike leads you through the virgin forest of Hearts Content Scenic Area to Hickory Creek Wilderness Area, where you can compare today's forests to those that existed before logging began over 100 years ago.
At Hearts Content, of particular interest are the centuries-old white pine trees that loom high above all the other trees. The white pine were established during a disturbance long ago and out grew the other species. Now they are hardly reproducing and will eventually give way to the dominant eastern hemlock and American beech.
Noteworthy about the Hickory Creek Wilderness is that it is one of the largest roadless areas of the region. Its forest, however, is relatively young.
