July 6, 2004 - Green Thumb Tuesday
![]() Green Thumb Tuesday: Annual Combinations Annual flowers provide a burst of color near entryways, patios, or even beside pools. By limiting the number of colors used in each bed to only two or three, the result is a more dazzling display whereas; too many colors together in one spot weaken visual impact. Considered the most striking combinations are those of red, yellow, and blue. Secondary color combinations are also captivating and include green, violet, and orange. Still attractive but less profound are combinations of flowers in a gradual sequence: red to orange, yellow to green, blue to violet. Most importantly, use your own eye to determine which color combinations you find most charming. Cannas lilies are unique with their exotic red flowers towering over lush foliage. They harmonize well with airy ornamental grasses like Calamagrostis and Fountain grass. Deep purple petunias, an esteemed garden favorite, contrast vividly with the lime green foliage of trailing wweet potato vine. Creamy orange Osteospermum with its glitzy purple center married with its lemon yellow cousin make an unbeatable pair. The vibrant yellow of Rudbeckia is even more prolific when augmented with the deep purple of violet sage. Today's photo was taken at WPC's community garden at California and Termon Avenues.
